He took a lot of patience to deal with a gang of dissidents. Catalogue of the first impressionist exhibition in 1874 was engaged in Renoirs brother Edmond. Monet originally named the painting Marina, but changed the title to Impression, Sunrise (Impression, Soleil Levant) for the 1874 Exhibition catalog listing. In 1985 the painting was stolen from the museum. The six painted canvases depict the port during different times during the day and different vantage points.

This technique is largely the result of the Impressionist desire to capture the fleeting moment en plein air. Monet’s aim was to create a style that involved using color to represent what he saw.
The artist’s work does indeed have a sketchlike quality, owing to his loose, broken brushwork that does not define what it represents. The work from which Impressionism got its name seems an appropriate place to start with in a formal analysis of this painting from 1872 by Claude Monet. Leroy’s response is understandable: Monet’s painting broke many artistic conventions. In a review of the exhibition, the critic Louis Leroy condemned Impression, Sunrise, arguing that it was nothing more than a sketch, and, in a negative context, he dubbed the show “The Exhibition of the Impressionists,” a term that the group proudly adopted.
The show served as an alternative to the traditional, state-run Salon and allowed artists to work in radically new ways. Impression, Sunrise was first shown in 1874 at an independent exhibition in Paris that was organized by a group of artists including Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas.
